The study was based on the operational definition of fear of falling, which is “low perceived self-efficacy at avoiding falls during essential, non-hazardous activities of daily living.” The Falls Efficacy Scale International (FES-I) and the Short Falls Efficacy Scale International (Short FES-I) are measures of “fear of falling” or, more properly, “concerns about falling”, which are suitable for use in research and clinical practice. Tinetti, Richman, and Powell (1990) developed the Falls Efficacy Scale (FES) to measure an individual's confidence in his/her ability to avoid a fall while performing specific activities. This scale was developed initially as a measure of fear of falling.
